Visually, it's aged badly

The practical effects, sets and costumes still look great, but the CGI (particularly the scenes where everything is rendered in CGI) does not. And this is a very CGI-heavy film in places.

I'd hate to see what "The Hobbit" films look like in 10 years time.

reply

The only option is if Jackson does what Lucas did to the original Star Wars Trilogy. It would cost a lot but they could go back and fix a ton of the visual problems. I agree. Especially on Blu Ray it looks really bad.

reply

The thing is ... "The Lord of the Rings" isn't "Star Wars". They are done making films and the upcoming Amazon series sounds like a dud.

I don't think Peter Jackson going back and touching up the special effects will lead to enough new Blu ray sales to justify the time and cost.

They'll probably just remake the trilogy in another ten or twenty years time.

reply

I think you're right. It would have been worth it if they hadn't already released extended editions of each movie.

reply

Damn homey, negative much?

Why does the Amazon series sound like a dud? I'm looking forward to it, personally.

reply

I never said LOTR is Star Wars. Cameron did the same thing with T2. He digtally altered the stuntman with Arnold's face and it looks great. You stated a problem, I just gave a possible solution.

reply

it's the fate of all cgi and modern film. It all has aged very badly.

reply

Aged badly? I thought the CGI didn't look that good when I saw it the first time. The worst scene was the fight on the bridge in the cave between the wizard and the cartoony demon.

The Hobbit was horrible especially with the dragon chase scenes.

reply

I agree. I’ve always thought the CGI looked mediocre. The elephants (ellephunts or whatever theyre called) looked horrible even back in theaters.

reply

I believe they'll definitely go back and fix these movies one day. Like 50 years from now. I think the future ability to render CGI is gonna be super cheap and easy.

reply

That's what they've been saying about CGI / CGA since Jurassic Park and Toy Story. It's still expensive because it's very time consuming.

reply

Visually, your mother has aged badly

reply

Damn.

reply

LOL

reply

It is almost 20 years old so the CGI should look aged However, I didn't think it looked aged except in the opening scenes with Sauron and here and there. I thought the Balrog still looked fine. It's not nearly as CGI dependent film as its sequels or any modern superhero film.

reply

The Fellowship running from the Balrog through Moria probably has the most visually dated CGI in the film trilogy. It looks like a video game.

reply

Yes, your right them running certainly looks dated. I guess I meant the Balrog itself looked fine.

reply

surly "them running" was done with the actual actors?

reply

There are films coming out today where the CGI looks like a video game.

I think the CGI in Fellowship still looks quite good. You may be able to pick out a shot here and a shot there that doesn't look great, but overall I have no problem with it. Sure, it would look better if the film was made today, but that doesn't mean it's bad.

reply

It means it’s dated.

reply

What matters is that we all enjoyed it..it may not hold up well but that's very common with a lot of movie classics. Jaws, CETK, and The Shining seem to age badly while Raiders seems fine. I remember buying the DVD and watching LOTR on a 27 inch CRT with my Pioneer A/V receiver and Bose 301's. I thought I was rich and that special effects were as good as it would ever get. Now I can't watch any special effects laden movies without being bored to tears. I enjoyed LOTR and I hope they'll go back to making good movies again someday.

reply

Watching Fellowship in the theater was one of the absolute best movie experiences of my life. I was totally into it, and even remember being on a kind of high for a few hours after I left the cinema. It was just fucking excellent.

Like I was saying in my earlier post, sure, the effects would look better if the film were made today. But they still look pretty good. I definitely don't sit there thinking "Aww man, these effects look like shit!" when I watch the movie.

reply

I agree.

reply

I had the Bose 301's. Great speakers.

That scene looks just as bad now as it did back then. Can't say it aged badly when it was bad to start with.

reply

You gotta’ be kidding me. I just played the extended blu-rays through my 4k blu-ray player and it looked amazeballs. I saw things i never even noticed before, like miniscule Frodo and Sam walking through the Dead Marshes in full cgi glory.

reply

I agree with you. Some people have a very sharp eye for this stuff and pick up on things that I would never notice unless it's specifically pointed out to me.

reply

Yep that scene in particular, i was resigned to the fact there was no reference of scale in that shot. Until the Blu-Rays. The CGI is better now, amazing.

reply

Within the context of it being a fantasy the visuals still work for me.

Btw, I just saw Avenger's End game and found the CGI very fake and unengaging, especially since the genre depends on us believing in Superheroes interacting with the modern human universe. Hulk, Thanos, Iron Man, and Thor all looked cartoony in their motion and design.
