The practical effects, sets and costumes still look great, but the CGI (particularly the scenes where everything is rendered in CGI) does not. And this is a very CGI-heavy film in places.
I'd hate to see what "The Hobbit" films look like in 10 years time.
The only option is if Jackson does what Lucas did to the original Star Wars Trilogy. It would cost a lot but they could go back and fix a ton of the visual problems. I agree. Especially on Blu Ray it looks really bad.

I don't think Peter Jackson going back and touching up the special effects will lead to enough new Blu ray sales to justify the time and cost.
They'll probably just remake the trilogy in another ten or twenty years time.
I think you're right. It would have been worth it if they hadn't already released extended editions of each movie.

I never said LOTR is Star Wars. Cameron did the same thing with T2. He digtally altered the stuntman with Arnold's face and it looks great. You stated a problem, I just gave a possible solution.

I agree. I’ve always thought the CGI looked mediocre. The elephants (ellephunts or whatever theyre called) looked horrible even back in theaters.

I think the CGI in Fellowship still looks quite good. You may be able to pick out a shot here and a shot there that doesn't look great, but overall I have no problem with it. Sure, it would look better if the film was made today, but that doesn't mean it's bad.

shareWhat matters is that we all enjoyed it..it may not hold up well but that's very common with a lot of movie classics. Jaws, CETK, and The Shining seem to age badly while Raiders seems fine. I remember buying the DVD and watching LOTR on a 27 inch CRT with my Pioneer A/V receiver and Bose 301's. I thought I was rich and that special effects were as good as it would ever get. Now I can't watch any special effects laden movies without being bored to tears. I enjoyed LOTR and I hope they'll go back to making good movies again someday.
shareWatching Fellowship in the theater was one of the absolute best movie experiences of my life. I was totally into it, and even remember being on a kind of high for a few hours after I left the cinema. It was just fucking excellent.
Like I was saying in my earlier post, sure, the effects would look better if the film were made today. But they still look pretty good. I definitely don't sit there thinking "Aww man, these effects look like shit!" when I watch the movie.

You gotta’ be kidding me. I just played the extended blu-rays through my 4k blu-ray player and it looked amazeballs. I saw things i never even noticed before, like miniscule Frodo and Sam walking through the Dead Marshes in full cgi glory.
shareI agree with you. Some people have a very sharp eye for this stuff and pick up on things that I would never notice unless it's specifically pointed out to me.

Btw, I just saw Avenger's End game and found the CGI very fake and unengaging, especially since the genre depends on us believing in Superheroes interacting with the modern human universe. Hulk, Thanos, Iron Man, and Thor all looked cartoony in their motion and design.
