Christian Slater Character: Hero or Big Dummy

Does anyone think Christian Slater's character, Tom, was heroic? Or, like me, think Tom should have made a run for it in the first place and not try to save the money? I think transport companies have insurance for robberies, so there was no need to risk his life to save a couple of bags of cash.

His partner, Uncle Charlie, wouldn't have been shot and Tom could have made it to higher ground before the dam broke if he wasn't fooling around trying to protect the money.

Factual error: his uncle charlie was shot before they knew it was even a robbery; and once the uncle was dead there was no reason to think they'd leave Tom alive.

In his shoes, I'd have run with the money and hid it for spite if they were going to kill me anyway.

I'm talking about the time period when the security guards realized the water was too high for the armored truck to make it out of town to the highway. When they drove into the low point of the road and the water literally flooded the engine. Way before the bad guys even showed up.

That's when Tom should have locked up the van and left the money for higher ground. The bad guys would see them leaving and wait until the coast was clear. There would be no need for the two groups to interact. Until Uncle Charlie hooked up with them later to get his cut, that is.

But nooooooooooooooooo, Tom had to "save the money".

Funnily enough, I think he made the decision to save the money only after Charlie was shot. If the water had continued to rise, I think if Charlie had said, "let's bail, we're going to drown here," Tom would have walked away even though they're not supposed to leave the truck.

Yeah, he should have bailed - the way things worked out (with the dam bursting) nobody would have known the money was stolen anyway.

BUT, there wouldn't have been a movie!! HA!!
