Can guns fire under water?

i didnt think revolvers could fire underwater, or if wet; yet they shoot underwater a lot in this movie... am i wrong or are they

reply

yes, revolvers will fire under water as the bullet is water tight, and the simplified operation of a revolver makes it possible, the only thing is that water slows the bullet significantly, and can sometimes cause the barrel to rupture, but depending on the gun, it will still function, semi automatics on the other had- have a harder time, the first shot will go off, but having the gun under water will create more resistance and the slide may not cycle completely or at all.

I'm somewhat amazed that the bullet was still fast & strong enough underwater to break the handcuffs. Perhaps the handcuffs got weaker while wet or under the water's pressure, but I can't really say as I didn't have 2 take physical science 2 get my Associate's degree.

I also just saw a gun fired underwater in "Cliffhanger." Not only is that possible, but Sylvester Stallone can do a lot of stuff underwater in a frozen pond except go n2 hypothermia w/n a minute!

i saw a thing on discovery once about bullets firing underwater & they pretty much suck, the lose their force very quickly & never travel in a straight line, like dude has to be 2 or 3 feet in front of you if you want to actually hurt them

the people were making special bullets to fire underwater though, gotta love it!

That has to be one of the dumbest things I ever read.

Just stop and think. If that were true, criminals would be peeing on handcuffs and escaping.

BTW, real handcuffs are made of hardened steel that is chrome plated. The only thing water would do is cause them to rust away. In about a hundred years.

Mythbusters said "yes, they can", though the bullets will have some decrease in speed etc.

The Sheriff holsters a hand gun in his boot when he goes after the
robbers - seems a stupid place to put a gun during a flood . . . .

Driver, Slater & Freeman are a bit wasted in this, but it's the wettest
movie I think I've ever seen. Mind you, Bladerunner was pretty
torrential.

i was more interested in knowing how a 6 shooter could fire 20 times without reloading
