I know this is a really old thread, but after hearing this was such a bad movie I decided out of boredom to finally see how bad. But I must admit I enjoyed it, although I'd hardly call it a great movie. I gave it a 6/10 (a solid D if this was school).
I LOVED the premise, I'm not sure why but it seemed to combine a heist movie with the Poseidon Adventure. Plus the acting (even Randy Quaid, to an extent) was pretty damn good. Plot-wise the movie surprised me a couple times, so overall I enjoyed it.
BUT, there were so many problems with the film that I found myself laughing many times. For starters, almost all of the characters that ended up "trapped" dealt with it in the stupidest ways possible. "Oh no! Somebody handcuffed me to a decorative wooden handrail! I couldn't possibly break it by kicking it repeatedly, even though the damn things break easily all the time even under normal use." Then there was the fact that, despite there being several tall brick buildings around, nobody decided to just lay low on the roof. Every character seemed to think they were safest at water-level, and then seemed shocked when that decision proved foolhardy. Then there was the fact that a great deal of this film's resolutions to characters "problems" were simply based on luck (for example, transformers exploding, conveniently timed to kill just the villains and no one else).
Overall I still want to like this film, cause I loved the cast (except for Minnie Driver's pathetic "American" accent), and I really enjoyed the premise and hoped they'd do more with it. The problem is they didn't do much, so the whole time watching I kept thinking that this could have been done so much better by someone else, which diminishes a lot of the fun of the movie.
