I Kinda Miss These Movies

Action movies in the 90's at least had interesting ideas to base the action around. Off the top of my head, I can think of The Rock, Speed, Con Air, Demolition Man, Face/Off, and probably others, including Hard Rain. Granted a lot of these are hit or miss, but does Hollywood make anything resembling these movies anymore? Most modern action movies are just with hitmen or stuff like that. Drive Angry is the closest that I can think of that came out recently to something you might have found in the 90's (although there is some grindhouse influence to it as well; maybe Nicolas Cage is a common denominator?).

I guess the Fast & Furious series might qualify due to it being so over the top, but I've never actually seen any of them since they seem like they suck.

The Mission Impossible sequels of recent years have the same kind of goofy sense of fun, but you're right - I also miss these types of action films, and it's weird how unique they were to the nineties. I think the emerging CGI technologies led to an imaginative rush of them, but after 9/11, that sense of playfulness never came back to this kind of film. Everything has to have a stance or agenda now.

I do too. Action movies died somewhere around the mid-90s. This movie captured the tone of the genre at its height very well.

I liked the first one, but the F&F sequels are awful. Too much at CGI and unrealistic looking action. When someone did something over-the-top in an old-school action movie it still looked real.

F & F 5 through 7 are pretty fun. Plus I liked Hobbs and Shaw a lot. The rest are optional.

If they weren't so busy filming men in stupid costumes with the underwear on the outside there would be more room for action movies

I think the only reason movies like this existed is because of the VHS market. There was a mega ton of money to be made in the home market those days that just isn't present in the streaming market. So everything has to be "safe" i.e. Hitman genre and what not. I should imagine the stunt men and special effects people are especially bored of it all. "What are we doing today boss? More wire work in front of a green screen?"
