Anyone else found the love interest subplot annoying?

It felt totally forced

As annoying as the love subplots in Destroy All Monsters and other japanese Godzilla films -- don't find them annoying at all.

The love subplot in Godzilla is actually pretty let's say, bittersweet, if you think about it: Nick has not forgotten Audrey for the eight years that they weren't together anymore. He had photos of her around and didn't find another partner; he didn't let go. Audrey is instead a tremendously frivolous character who not only let go of her partner like nothing (she disappeared!) but only comes back for him only because he's related to a major story that could finally give her the career-break she so bloody wants. She exploits him for her needs; and it's only towards the end of the second act that she is convinced (by someone else!) to fix things up. And she does -- redeeming herself and realizing what truly is important. The irony of it all being that Nick still accepts her in the end (instead of just forgiving her and saying "*beep* off").

It's all very simple, but it's an interesting character arc.

It was very lame and very forced. If the two of them had chemistry, I wouldn't have minded it at all. But they had no chemistry whatsoever, and yet the movie was trying so hard to make us care about them. And that's a big part of the reason why the middle of this film really bogs down. And every criticism Maria Pitilla has received is absolutely on-target. She is obnoxious. And unlike most people, I've seen her in other films. I still wonder what Richard Attenborough was thinking when he cast her as Mary Pickford in "Chaplin." Seriously. Mary Pickford, one of the great actresses of cinema, and they cast THIS actress to portray her?

The biggest problem with this movie is that the middle section runs out of steam. They had a good start and a good ending. And in order to fix the middle, they would have needed to rework the love story (and get an actress who can be charismatic on screen) and eliminate the "Jurassic Park" rip-off stuff. They weren't even being clever with that. A lot of the time, Emmerich is just copying Spielberg's technique, right down to the iconic shots (the monsters figuring out how to open doors, casting shadows on the walls, the camera taking their point of view as they charge at a screaming victim). That's what wrecked this movie.

I fear Audrey will just screw Nick again like she did twice already.

The idea behind it was okay, but the acting from Pitillo was so horribly, horribly bad that it just didn't work.

Here's to the health of Cardinal Puff.

That's exactly how I felt, although she did contribute to save the day in the end... I guess that should get her to be a friend again, but no more.

They apparently dated for almost 4 years and she didn't even pronounce his last name right lol

She was obnoxious and I didnt want them to get back together. Even 8 year old me realized that she sucked and that he shouldnt waste his time on her.
