Damn, this movie is depressing

I mean, really, did the studio heads say to each other, “Hey, those guys over there are making Armageddon with Michael Bay, let’s make our own, and make it as bleak and sappy as possible!”
Other studio head, “Yeah, that’s a great idea! That’s definitely what the people want!”.
1998 was a weird year for apocalypse movies.
You think they were trying for an Oscar?

It is a very sad movie for sure but I think they were going for a more realistic portrayal of such an event as opposed to Armageddon's total action cheese-fest 🙂

I still liked it to be honest, but it was incredibly sad and sappy in some parts.

Your reasoning (as to Deep Impact being more realistic) makes a lot of sense.
I don’t necessarily dislike this movie, it’s just that the ride is quite a bummer, in my humble opinion.
Can’t quite decide whether I prefer cheese or melodrama…guess it depends on my current mood, haha!

Lol, I liked them both! Sometimes I just need some cheesy action in my life 😁
And yes you are right, Deep Impact is hard to watch, every main character had a very sad story, good grief.

Another good movie along those lines is Greenland with Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin. I'd recommend it if you have not watched it.

Yeah, they were probably something a little more serious than a standard popcorn flick. Kind of like how Dante's Peak is more of a thriller while Volcano is almost a comic-book.
