would the secretary's family have a chance?

at the beginning of the movie, you see james cromwell stocking his yacht full of food, etc - basically non-perishables in bulk like he's planning on riding out the emergency on the sea. although he seems pretty resigned to the fact that the world's doomed and he just wants to spend time with his family, do you think out on the ocean he'd have any chance of making it?

of course, he'd have to be pretty far down the south atlantic or through the panama canal...

If he got far enough away from the tsunami then yes. Otherwise he'd have been obliterated by the wave. And his little boat too.

I seem to remember that he was stocking his boat with supplies long before the comet ever hit.

Of course at this point the comet was still one body and not two separate hunks of rock. So his thinking was that the planet was doomed.

As we seen in the film not everyone dies.

he seemed to think that society, aside from the arks, was over, but he was still trying for it on his boat. he said he just wanted to spend time with his family before it was all over but i can't see him spending the last days of planet earth (in his opinion, anyway) eating MREs on a boat instead of doing fun or at least normal family stuff. maybe he thought that after the comet (the whole comet, mind) impact, he'd have stockpiled enough food on there last two years? but wouldn't the surface temperatures drop to unsurvivable levels after an impact like that?

maybe he was hopeless but still holding out that somehow they could make it. if i had his salary, i'd go for a bunker in the mountains and not a boat, but hey.
