Analytical Text Response

Hey everyone,

In my English class we've been watching Chicken Run and we have an analytical text response to write.
The topic is: "Chicken Run is a children's film, it has nothing to offer an adult audience. Do you agree?"
I do not agree, and know of many adult references in the film, but I am finding it hard to actually write the essay. I need to discuss the topic and make references back to the film, but I'm not entirely sure how to do so. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One good start you could make is by checking out the "movie connections" link on the greeting page and investigating why some of the connections were made between this movie and the others listed. You will most likely see some related posts on this board--people often ask why or how a movie spoofs or references another movie. Wikipedia.com is another good place to go and find some data to back you up.

"...And so the pig says to the horse, hey fella, why the long face?"

"Hey, why the long face?" Ugly Stepsister to Donkey/Stallion, Shrek 2

Thanks, much appreciated.

If you watch the film as a World War II escape film, you will see lots of parallels to Nazi concentration camps. Perhaps compare it to "Escape from Sobiobor" or other similar films.

The most direct parallels (without going into detail) are with The Great Escape.

the opening scenes where she tries to escape via the tunnel is copied from the great escape, the coal pit was also comparable to the confinement the prisoners inthe great escapes were put in

When Ginger bounces the ball in confinement that was a spoof of 'The Great escape'

not sure if this would qualify as a reference understood only by adults, but I am surprised that no one has mentioned the many references to Star Trek. It's these odd little references either in the dialogue or more subtly in the visual background that will keep adults amused while watching the real story unfold. As noted in other messages, The Great Escape is an obvious one, along with Braveheart, but the exploding pie machine, with its mechanical problems are ringing a bell - something along the lines of a Sci-Fi film, but drawing a blank on the actual movie. Perhaps other readers can come up with more.

The pie machine scene where Rocky and Ginger are inside is from Raiders of The Lost Ark
