Jesus the idea that other people will overwhelm your conciousness so they can live forever is high octane-nightmare fuel.the only way this film could have happy ending is if malkovich is killed instantly saving Emily and those after her.
I think Kaufman and Jonze were well aware of how horrific it was; consider that, in an earlier draft, Dr. Lester and his cohorts were Satanists, with a much more Rosemary's Baby sort of vibe. Bottom line, it's a black comedy.
Full agreement. The true sadness of it all is in the bar scene when Cusack leaves. Malkovich looks in the mirror..."I'm free..", only to be enslaved again mere seconds later.It is a tragic tale with no heroes.
