How much did the director give to these films? With Charlie's writing being the most important elements of both, could any capable director have made them?

For me, the directing of either film didn't really stand out (the way the work of some directors does).

Thoughts?

I agree. I have all the DVDs in my collection listed with directors (if at all notable or interesting). These two movies are the only ones (out of 600 odd) where I have entered the writer's name instead.
