Reminds me of Event Horizon... (SPOILER x 2)

Yes, this movie reminds me of the scariest movie ever made. It's the same concept: a ship, lots of cool technology, a somewhat scary environment, an evil entity in the ship. One character joins the evil side. In the end I was thinking if the ending would be like in EH and so it was.

I still liked this movie. Not scary at all, not as good as EH but still a decent movie.

Haven't seen that movie but it does sound a bit like a rip. Is Event Horizon any good?

reply

first, when I saw the subject, I wanted to kill you as brutal as possible. But when you put it like that, you're not wrong at all. Still, Event Horizon is a masterpiece, and Virus is one of the suckiest movies I've ever seen. Thats what I think.

You're not wrong at all. Still, EH is a masterpiece, Virus sucks.

vote 10 for sin city!

Yeah, EH leaves Virus dead in the water, though you're right that there are similarities. I mean, they are effectively both "haunted house" movies, though EH handles the matter far better, in my opinion.

I think a closer analogy would be with "Deep Rising" - a far superior film to Virus, same setting - a ghost ship, this time a pleasure cruiser - though a slightly different premise. "Deep Rising" has plenty of servicable special effects, but thankfully, a cast who are aware they are in a b-movie creature-feature, so don't take themselves too seriously. It's not in the same league as Event Horizon, but if you were disappointed by Virus, Deep Rising is probably close to what they wanted to, or should've at least been trying to achieve.

Also, they are both gruesome in the sense of how the crew memembers were killed. I think Jason Issacs character's death was probably the worst *shudders*

reply

And who was Jason's character and how did he die? I saw this movie too long ago and found it quite good, yet a bit freaky (I remember seeing some captain or somethings head on a robot body and it was speaking to the main lady).
I would be interested to know how some people died, and see if it jogs my memory. Ta x

I was talking about Jason Isaacs character in Event Horizon, he played the doctor. He was strung up horizontally with hooks in his backs and his chest was cut open, all his insides had fallen out into this tub beneath him. It was pretty gruesome.

reply

Yeah it reminded me of Event Horizon too. Only the psychological aspect of EH made it a lot scarier than Virus.

The fact that that evil entity in EH could get into your head was terrifying!

reply

Yes it is a little like EH, but I actually liked both movies. Virus had some awesome effects, especially the robot & storm sequences. EH had some excellent effects and set design, but I'm not sure what it is but I always feel disappointed after I watch it. It's like it should have been so much more than what it turned out to be.

At least Virus wrapped up the story neatly. EH just left you scratching your head when the credits rolled.

Many elements of Ghost Ship (2002) were copied from Virus (1999):

- storm
- tugboat
- massive abandoned ship
- salvage money opportunity
- own boat gets sunk by the bigger vessel
- all are forced to aboard the abandoned ship they have found
- ship has a deadly surprise for the new crew
