wasn`t this filmed in 4:3?

My video is 4:3 full screen, but the technical specifications say 1.85:1??
The broadcast version on channel4 was in 16:9, but the top and bottom of screen was obscured by black lines which are so often added on television! Does anyone else find this EXTREMELY annoying?

reply

The film was shot in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Because most VHS tapes are 4:3, it means that some of the image was lost in the pan-and-scan process (which is basically choosing which part of the image should stay). Channel Four broadcast it in its correct aspect ratio (the only terrestrial channel to do this 100% of the time), which means that the version you saw was what the makers of the film intended you to see. The "black lines" may be annoying, but they're supposed to be there. For more information about this, see www.widescreen.org.

thanks for the reply! i`ll have to borrow a copy off someone taken from channel 4 to compare the two versions! i`m sure some films have looked like they`ve had the top and bottom cropped, fear and loathing in las vegas, for example... the reason i posted this question was, i had the misfortune to see a full-screen version of 2001 on itv3 a few weeks ago, it was terrible, as you can imagine! and the website you directed me to finally solves the riddle of terminator2!

Same here. Imo movies just don't feel the same when they have that "zoomed in" look for full screen televisions. And no, I don't have a widescreen TV. I don't mind the black bars.
