Vastly under-rated film

I think this has go down as one of Oliver Stones finest releases. It's refreshing to see big time Hollywood director re-tracing his roots and making a picture on a smaller and more intimate scale. The cast is of the highest order and there's a nice balance of humour and drama.Just before i logged on to the U-Turn page i guessed that IMDB users would have credited the film with at least a 7.1 so i was very surprised to see the film getting such a low user rating.

I kind of expected the rating it has, but I gave it an 8 myself. I saw it recently, and enjoyed it very much. The last part of the movie seems a little forced, which is too bad, but the final scene is great! I'm a fan of Penn, and he really has a good part in this film. I also enjoyed the somewhat weird camera movements that occurred sometimes. There was only one annoying element: the appearance of Liv Tyler. That made no sense at all.

The whole atmosphere in the film was desert hot.
But, indeed, those particular scenes spiced up things even more.

I agree with all of you in this forum...
really a nice film :)

Oh yeah, incest is really hot. I liked the movie but not for that reason; I thought the sex you mentioned was very disturbing, as I'm sure it was meant to be.

reply

I agree! An it is the only good movie with Jennifer Lopez (in my opinion).

reply

I agreee about it being the only good movie with JLo. All the other actors are greats, from Powers Boothe to Penn. I guess Liv Tyler was just a girl getting a bus ticket, in reference to above. A cameo maybe. I think it's Stone's best, it is certainly my favorite from him & one of my all-times. Yes, the ending did seem a wee bit forced. But it is still a great film noir.

Its a gem that you just stumble upon one day on an TV and you'll probably purcahse it when you see it at a bargin price in HMV or Virgin .

This is what just happened to me last night. Had heard this referred to as his worst film on occasion, even. I was very pleased with the film. Want to buy the dvd.

Didn't even recognize J Lopez in this film for quite some time. She was good in this, and so lovely. Not a fan of hers at all.

reply

I agree for the most part...although "The Cell" was pretty incredible. Of course, J-Lo was pretty uninteresting in it, so there ya go.

reply

Gosh, I hate to disagree with everybody. 5/10

It's not under-rated, but it is one of Oliver Stone's least-known work. It was probably too quirky and undescribable.

Sean Penn is miscasted as the protagonist. He's great at being damaged as in The Assassination of Richard Nixon. Joaquin would've been much better. He's better at acting quietly intense. Although Joaquin was damn funny in the movie.

Camera work seemed like a retread of Natural Born Killers

reply

5/10? Reserve those ratings for bland filler like Iron Man please.

There were lots of great characterizations; they more or less made the movie memorable.

Both films had the same cinematographer: Robert Richardson.

A Clockwork Orange is the greatest film ever.

Really?
I`m curious now to know what the other 6 are.

It's funny, I had mixed feelings while I was watching it. I couldn't decide if it was good or too over-the-top. But after finishing it, I realized I actually quite enjoyed it. Despite the bizarre story and characters, I found myself really invested. It was funny but intense at the same time. I didn't even notice it was an Oliver Stone film till I got on here, but I think it definitely speaks well for him. Certainly underrated, if it wasn't for Blockbuster Online's reccomendation I never would have heard of it.

Agreed. This film is brilliant. I'm a huge Stone fan, and I like everything I've seen of his (which is pretty much everything), and I own a box set of his work. This movie is pretty different thematically then lots of his other films, but stylistically, it's very similar. There's an interesting documentary in the box set where he talks about making this movie, and that it came about when he was feeling very depressed and needed to emotionally heal himself by making something VERY nihilistic. And it worked. Strangely, it's pretty damn funny as well!

But yes, not only one of my favorite Stone films, but one of my favorite movies, period.

It`s a wicked and memorable little film, I`d give it an 8 out of 10.
