great movie.the only question is - did bobby die in the end or not?

UMMMMMMMM....... I don't know. It's kind of like the ending in Night Moves where Gene Hackman is drifiting around in that boat in the Gulf Stream. Suppose it leaves you guessing.

I was wondering about that too. He died I think. When he was sitting in the car and started it up, you see the credits start rolling, he's looking up at the buzzards circling and the camera pans down to him again and he just sits there motionless with his head back.

He might have had a chance from the fall, but the gunshot assures you that he might not make it, being that he's in the middle of nowhere.

The ending is forshadowed the entire film.

"It's a good thing your car didn't break down in the middle of the desert...you'd be dead in no time."

Yes, his fate was sealed the moment he was rude to the mechanics. The moral of the story is to treat everyone with dignity, because you don't know when you'll need them.
