shareAs a HUGE FAN and ADMIRER of Oliver Stone, I COULDN'T AGREE MORE! U-Turn is truly one of his best films, an entertaining film noir in a modern setting with a dark undercurrent of humor throughout. Well worth the time!
shareat least Someone agrees with me..i also think Oliver Stone casts his films really nicely...like how nick nolte, powers boothe ,billy bob thornton and others just really fit into their u-turn roles.....this Stone film,(along with Natural Born Killers) is one that has a special magic that none of his other films have!
"Human beings aint only human,ya know.... They got animals livin inside em too..."
i really liked this movie too, i wonder why it only has a rating of 6.7 here. i loved the movie for its craziness, every single character in this movie was awesome.
shareI didn't like it as much as you guys. I was sad at what Stone had done, to be honest.
It wasn't horrible (I would never say that about a Stone film) but it was the worst of the movies of his that I've seen (if truly forced I would tie it with Nixon, but at least Nixon had a decent screenplay).
It just can't be compared to "Salvador", "Platoon", "Wall Street", "Born on the Fourth of July", "The Doors", "JFK", "Heaven & Earth", "Natural Born Killers", or "Alexander". I have yet to see "Talk Radio", "World Trade Center", and "Any Given Sunday", but I'm hoping they're better than U Turn.
If it was supposed to be satirical, then fine, but as a serious film, it just didn't work. The scene with J Lo and a tomahawk just made me wince. J Lo did a bad job in this film.
Did you actually watch the garbled mess that was Alexander? Proof that Stone has lost it along with World Trade Centre.
Apart from J-Lo, this film is great. Excellent casting, acting, the script moves along at a cracking pace and Sean Penn holds the movie together with brilliant acting. It's obviously not Stone's best work but it's better than Alexander that's for sure.
That sands not gonna rake itself Hiroshi.
""Its obviously not Stones's best work""
I diasgree. I think is his best film, along with Natural Born Killers. I think he does his best work away from War and Politics, (except for Alexander ,that sukked...

Alexander is better than U-Turn. Any day.
A Clockwork Orange is the greatest film ever.
I agree too. I LOVE this film... Its soo cool. This and the Doors are his best films to me.
But hey i love Red Rock West too...
What.... I can´t understand why People give Negative about this Movie !!
I Love this Movie and watch it any Time again again and again... Great !!
They should make a Remake or like that :)
I just saw this one, and I think it falls in the same category as natural born killers for me... you will either love it for its craziness, or feel generally uneasy about how messed up it is.
shareI agree. Its definitely a love it or hate deal. I love this movie. It's got a great bunch of looney characters but actually what I like most is the editing.
You're not hardcore! No you're not hardcore! Unless you live hardcore!
Yes!! Brilliant editing. I love the pop/fizzle effects, the radical color experimentation shots,
its all so surreal!! Watching this on a huge TV on Blu Ray is amazing!
Its similar to these fantastic films (in terms of style):
Running Scared
Domino
Natural Born Killers
Spun
"Animals are beasts, but Men are Monsters..."

I think a lot of it has to do with the incest storyline. People get really squeamish over that subject. I think the same thing happened with the comedy Say It Isn't So!
Was it the greatest comedy ever made? Nope.
Did it deserve to be attacked the way it was? Nope.
Personally, I love U Turn and this is coming from somebody who loathes Sean Penn.
I suspect the hate for this movie stems from the career curse that's haunted Stone post-Natural Born Killers. Internet fanboys are never going to forgive him from rewriting Tarantino's NBK script, and right-wing (some left-wing) media moguls don't take him seriously anymore because of his conspiracy theories.
Siskel and Ebert were huge fans but disliked this movie because they found it a pointless exercise; I recall Siskel complaining that it had "the violence of NBK, but without that film's intellectual content."
I disagree with them, however. The movie may not be "intellectual", but Stone is making a point that in film noir this gritty, nobody gets left off the hook.
"What I don't understand is how we're going to stay alive this winter."
This movie is one of Stone's best, right up there with NBK. Great cast, great location, great script and the shooting style is just awesome. Love it!
shareI have never seen a good Oliver Stone movie...except this which is one of my all time favourites! Maybe that says something? can't get why people don't like it, maybe it's too slow and wierd for some, I don't know! I can recommend Breakdown with Kurt Russel as a movie with a similar setting and really good as well
shareSiskel seemed to misunderstand the intention of the film, thinking it a pure comedy. I don't think that was Stone's intent. He has said he was attempting "film noir".

I despised the god-awful ending. Bobby's leg was clearly broken and I think it's a bit of a stretch for us to imagine him crawling back up to the roadway. The ending felt forced, hurried, not planned at all.
A better ending would have at least brought this film above the level of mediocrity.
Stone clearly had the ending in mind from the start. Bobby was never going to leave Superior. Why is the film called U Turn? And why do we see the U Turn permitted when he takes the fork to Superior?
The whole of the interplay with Darryl makes sense when the radiator hose blows again.
On the broken leg, maybe... although Bobby says his leg is broken, are we sure it is? Or is that to lure her down?
