Why does Hollywood think all Arizonians have Texas accents?

Hello, I'm from a town literally about 70 miles east of Superior, AZ. I'm a huge fan of "Raising Arizona", think "U-Turn" is an okay movie, not a great flick. Just wondering though, do people outside of my state know that we don't all speak in Texas accents?

Everyone in "Raising AZ" - classically though, not complaining in the least bit - speaks in a Texas accent, as do most characters in "U-Turn". Truthfully, most people from Arizona have the standard American accent, a little bit borderline on the California-dude accent. You'll hear some older men & women speak in the Texas accent, but only because they migrated from Texas or somewhere close.

I just think it's funny. Maybe it's because of our wild west history.

Long live Toby N Tucker & HI, but dudes - we're closer to California & Nevada than we are Texas.

Why does "Everyone" think anyone with a Southern to semi-Southern accent is an inbred, truck-loving moron?

reply

Its not so much a "Texas" accent, its more of a "redneck" accent. My cousins live in Texas, some have the accent, others dont. Its not just in Texas or even the south, its all over this damn country, I hear it in Texas, Utah, Georgia, California, Montana, North Dakota and Illinios. I dont really know what it is, there are just some people out in this country who speak that way and it freaks me out. I did though have a history proffesior last semester who actually had the accent and still sounded inteligent.

Stupidity and Ignorance
Just like they think people in the south or N.C are hicks with missing teeth and screwing a relative. They act like they are stupid and only know what's going on where they live.

I'm from AZ and everybody has a Spanish accent more than anything else.
Somebody please burn my state to the ground. AZ is a horrible place to live.

Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out of my state

Haha, Arizona is awesome. Been here 9 years. You must live in a really poor part of AZ. But, for those of us who are not poverty stricken and living in Mesa or Apache Junction, we love this state.

reply

All southern accents are the same.

I dunno - the biggest 'accent' in the movie was Billy Bob Thornton's. And he IS from Texas. And, if you watch the end of the movie, *SPOILERS*, where Sean Penn almost looks like him and realizes that he's stuck, you might think that BBT ended up in the town as well and sabatoged Penn's car as payback for the jokes and so he'd get stuck and realize the hell of being stranded in a town that most would just pass through. Taken in this light, the rest of the characters and their accents wouldn't matter so much - the waitress (haggerty), the bully (phoenix), and so on. They might not be locals! Maybe it's a vortex or black hole.

What the hell is there to love about AZ or southern fried inbred morons with texas accents. This would be a far better better country if it was only the east and west coast and everything in between gone.

reply

Exactly,I lived in AZ pretty much all my life and everytime there is a movie based on the seting of AZ the locals sound like dumb hicks... People are far from hicks, & I am yet 2 met n-eone with a accent... if anything there are more people from different states living out here,ie; the midwest and east coast than actual AZ natives

reply

I know someone from Arizona, has no accent, that I can detect, and she's no dumb hick either. When at a Kentucky fried chicken establishment, she ordered one thing, the clerk said they had run out of that thing (in Spanish) to the manager who replied (in Spanish) just give her this, she won't know the difference, so my friend answered (in Spanish) "Yes I will know the difference becuse if I eat that, in 10 seconds my throat will close up and I will suffocate as I am very allergic to it." BTW, she's Italian/French/Scottish with a smidgeon of Portugese in her married to some guy with an Irish surname.

Well I am from AZ now but from NY before. AZ is great, the movie is weird but I am obsessed by it, must watch it every time it is on. I come from the Bronx and J Lo does not have a traditional Bronx accent, the accent is Hispanic influenced.

further to this question - why do all americans think all of england speaks like Hugh Grant???

if it bleeds we can kill it

reply

I can surpass it... Why do all Americans think all the 300 million of Spanish-speakers in the whole world speak with the same accent of the chicano bands from Los Angeles?

reply

NO one in arizona speaks with an accent. I live in Scottsdale and no one here has an accent. Also the majority of people here are originally from another state. I myself am originally from Oregon. There are hicks here and "desert rats" which I can't stand, but they all live outside of the Phoenix valley. Phoenix is a huge city with normal people and is similar to LA. Once you leave the valley though you are like stepping into a MAD MAX movie. Everything outside the Phoenix valley should be nuked (including Tucson).

I have an even better one. How is it you geniuses know how "all Americans" think?

Let me ask you something. How come you're asking so many jack-assy questions?

reply

Years ago, a midwestern accent was common in Arizona.

It was just there to make the movie better. It was an artistic decision to make it a real hellhole. The real Arizona has nothing to do with that.
