Why can't one stop watching it?
When it's on tv? I mean I know it's terrible, it is a terrible film but you still have to watch it. Kind of like a trainwreck.

shareI have a theory as to why this middling movie was a massive hit and widely beloved even though it's not very good:
James Cameron sold his soul to Satan during filming.
Really! It was massively over budget and had bad buzz, everyone thought it was going to be a disaster before it was released but it turned out to be a massive hit even though it wasn't very good. And everything Cameron has done since has been a massive hit even if it's not very good, what else explains all that?
What explains it?
Good movies to everyday people make more money than good movies to critics.
Then again, critics like the same story told over and over again in different costumes of the Marvel Universe, and they make a lot of money.
In a word, MAMMON. Modern societies preoccupation with wealth. This was a BIG expensive production with over priced actors playing wealthy elite who go down with their jewels. Disgusting. The true victims are barely heard from. The same reason the 1953 version sank. AT least A Night To Remember (1958) put more emphasis on the lower classes and their unfortunate fate. (Remember the child crying for his mother?) Why should we shed a tear for these snobs?
shareInteresting.
share"Why should we shed a tear for these snobs?"
Because they are also human beings with families who feel emotions and pain and didn't deserve a fate like this? I don't give a shit about the fictional characters in this dumb movie, but I feel as much sadness for the wealthy Titanic victims as I do for the poor victims.
^^ This.
On top of that, I thought it put plenty of emphasis on those traveling in steerage or 3rd class. Not to mention, one of the two lead characters *was* lower class!
Who can forget that highly effective, horrifying scene when those in 3rd class were desperately trying to escape their flooded deck, and that damned stewart or whatever he was, refused to open the gate!!
It's not my favourite movie, but it's easy to see why it was a hit and why people still watch it.
1. It's about Titanic. Loads of people remain fascinated by the subject.
2. The special effects were great. Really gave me the feeling of being there, witnessing it all.
3. The acting was quite good, and starred two beautiful and appealing people.
4. It had a nice, but tragic, love story threaded throughout.
5. Nice touch having the story recounted through the eyes of a survivor.

same as looking at your post pretty much as well.
Because it's a great, brilliantly made movie? Or are you too insecure to admit that?
shareI assure you, this one can stop watching it.

It's pure eye-candy. The huge, opulent ship, the beautiful clothes & jewels, the pretty pretty protagonists, the overwhelming sfx as the ship made its final descent: all combine to make it very watchable.
