Why can't one stop watching it?

I have a theory as to why this middling movie was a massive hit and widely beloved even though it's not very good:

James Cameron sold his soul to Satan during filming.

Really! It was massively over budget and had bad buzz, everyone thought it was going to be a disaster before it was released but it turned out to be a massive hit even though it wasn't very good. And everything Cameron has done since has been a massive hit even if it's not very good, what else explains all that?

Sounds like the topic maker and Otter are "too cool" to just say they liked the movie. Lots of people liked it and it was successful in the box office so not sure how your logic on it being bad makes sense.

In a word, MAMMON. Modern societies preoccupation with wealth. This was a BIG expensive production with over priced actors playing wealthy elite who go down with their jewels. Disgusting. The true victims are barely heard from. The same reason the 1953 version sank. AT least A Night To Remember (1958) put more emphasis on the lower classes and their unfortunate fate. (Remember the child crying for his mother?) Why should we shed a tear for these snobs?

When it's on tv? I mean I know it's terrible, it is a terrible film but you still have to watch it. Kind of like a trainwreck.

Because it's a great, brilliantly made movie? Or are you too insecure to admit that?

It's pure eye-candy. The huge, opulent ship, the beautiful clothes & jewels, the pretty pretty protagonists, the overwhelming sfx as the ship made its final descent: all combine to make it very watchable.
