I know he was supposed to be the "bad guy" or Antagonist. But he was actually a good guy, not too different from Rico. Not only that but he was a good soldier and handled himself as well as anyone could have. He didn't back down and took care of business. IMO the only reason he's portrayed as the "douche bag" is because of the Carmen/Rico love triangle thing. Too bad. He was pretty cool, would have made a good Rough Neck.
"Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!"
He was extremely full of himself but ultimately I agree with everyone here, Rico was the real dbag. He got all in Zander's face for talking to Carmen because he's an insecure prick. We're only supposed to like Rico more because we know more about his backstory.
1) The football game: Zander talking to a girl. Rico shoves him at the line and says, "Don't get any ideas about my girlfriend." (or something like that). Zander correctly shoves him back (as any guy would) and edges Rico on. Pretty much end scene.
2) First Meeting since Academy: Zander just says, "Yah best in the fleet." and Johnny acts like a bish and walks away. Zander eggs him on some, but it's fairly mutual IMO.
3) Then Zander rescues the Roughnecks and runs out of the shuttle shooting. And let's Carmen know her friend is back there.
4) Fights to the death.
He was a cool character and wasn't the antagonist at all. Rico was pretty much a little bish through the entire movie. And Carmen was a ridiculous dick tease.

This. I feel like every time I see this movie, I like Rico a little less each time. I know he's supposed to be a dumb jock but I wish they did something to make him more likeable.
