So why did Earth have a huge space fleet?

One thing bugs (pun not intended) me about the film, and I love the film.

Why did Earth have a huge space fleet and an investment into space?

Did they know of aliens prior to the bugs? Did we have a first contact that caused us to militarise like this?

idk, because space is cool(no temperature pun intended), and by extension going there is cool.
What bugs me is the that the quality of effects and how the cgi and physical were mixed has been in my mind unmatched. TLOTR made a good world but so does this(football scenes included... it's culture showing that everyone is badass)... The whole world is created, albeit from a ridculous foundation, very effectively. That makes this movie stand out.

I know the look of this movie still holds up pretty well. I love it.

I'm thinking maybe we had some kind of first contact before the bugs, so why else would you build so many military installations pointed away from Earth. That bit stood out for me. Most of the stuff had guns pointed not at Earth but away from Earth.

If everything was modular and was easy to interchange then why would it not be easy to change the orientation 180 degrees. Think of a + interlocking in a circle (edited to add: basically think of tapping a keg but much more)... that could be interchanged in any 90 degree orientation. Also, maybe everyone was paranoid about a planet killing asteroid and built the proper defenses. Or before where the guns were used to be devices such as telescopes for observing the universe; imagine every gun as a telescope with very specialized equipment that was replaced with a gun once the alien threat became known... of course a few guns would have been there though because of the asteroid threat... I mean DONT YOU WANT TO LIVE FOREVER?

reply

OF COURSE i WANT TO LIVE FOREVER.

I really like the Movie, and I'm Reading the book right now.

My guess to why the humans have these huge space armada in the movie, while their enemy are without any actual space travel capabilities themselves is the mix between material from the book and the material the filmmakers made up and changed.

I agree that it could seem to be a little overkill, but based on the book the humans actually goes around waging war with numerous alien species, thús there's a good reason to have a big fleet.

So when they strip the movie of the other enemies I agree it can feel strange since the 'bugs' in the movie mostly seems to be hiding underground when the humans isn't around.

However! There are many discussions about the human regime in control in both the book and the movie, and many seem to agree that it's a kind of military totalitarian regime. And in that case it could be a logical thing to spend lots and lots of money on the military and military propaganda.

Anyway, TGIF! 

It be cool if they had space battles with the bugs. If the bugs are capable of breeding transport bugs, then maybe they can breed bugs that can fill the role as capital ships and fighters.

The Earth of Starship Troopers is a fascist, militaristic society. They would build a big space fleet as a way of glorifying the regime, regardless of whether they actually needed it to combat enemies.

This film is a mataphor for Nazi Germany and the Wehrmact of the 1930's. Hence the over the top military. 

Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded. Yogi Berra

The film is a satire of nationalism, fascism and militarization (among other things). The Federation is a society that glorifies its military, holds up enlistment in the armed forces as the ultimate way to serve society, and restricts political office (and even the right to vote) to those who've worn the uniform.

Of course they've got a giant space fleet. Whether or not they actually need one is irrelevant.

bc at some point in our future, machines will eventually take over most manual labor and there won't be anything new to do on earth.. one world government due to beinh attacked by aliens, with the possible exploration of life bearing planets to eventually live on, space is our next frontier..

believe me once the world is dominated by one milatary the next thing to be dominated is the heavens.. take avatar for example..
