Seems to me in the futuristic setting here a more logical approach would be to bomb the hell out of the planet instead of sending in troops.i get there would be no movie at that point, but it seems the more realistic answer.

The problem is that Bug society is based on living deep underground, the planets they live on don't seem to have any obvious surface targets of any value. Short of carpet bombing their planets with nukes, bombardments probably wouldn't do them any real harm.

It's said in the movie that the planet will be glassed, but it doesn't really matter because the bugs live underground and for every bug you kill another 10 will probably take its place
