Starship Troopers and Apocalypse Now

I just realized, Verhoeven is a fan of Coppola. I identified two thingies in Starship Troopers, lifted straight from Apocalypse Now:

1. Death from above - tattooed on the four friends' arms, is Bill Kilgore's motto, painted on his helicopter and cards he leaves on his catch.

2. Rasczak bringing footballs and beer and violins to the troops after the fight, is Bill Kilgore bringing beer and surfboards and guitars to the troops after their fight.

Good catch, if Coppola's anti-war motives were subtle, Verhoeven went full throttle, I can't get my head around how the script got through without being red flagged. Sure, critics were clueless but they are not considered to be a smartest bunch even if they like to think that way.

It got through because it's sci fi. A lot of Rod Serling's early TV,work didn't get through because of heavy handed social topics. But on The Twilight Zone he was able to send any social message he wanted.

Good point. There is a great interview with Serling where I think he mentioned it himself.
