The movie where a chick thinks shes going into space when in reality her ship goes into the sea. She thinks she touches sand and stuff but then she finds out her ship never really went into space. Sorry for vague description but Im trying to find it. Thanks!
The movie is Contact and is based on the novel (of the same name) written by the late Carl Sagan. Great movie and even better novel.
**Spoilers below**
Jodie Foster DOES go into space and reaches the planet/destination that the aliens who send out the instructions for building the machine she travels in, set her to.
Sagan did something very clever - instead of describing the aliens as having tentacles or something cheesy, he makes them to be mindreaders who manifest themselves as the person closest to the traveller (Foster), so she'd be more comfortable dealing with them and asking question as part of the first contact.
The beach is just a setting for the whole scene, which again has a special connection to Foster and her dad.
