For some reason, I thought of Dustin Hoffman as Norman when I first read the book.

Yeah me too. I read the book first then saw the movie but I thought of Dustin Hoffman as Normal all the way through the book. I think I may have seen a trailer or preview of the movie and somehow recollected him being involved in some way, and that's where his image came to mind when I was reading the book.

That's funny, cos I mentally cast Samuel L Jackson as Harry when I first read the book, which was long before they started making the film! Then saw the trailer in the cinema and was slightly impressed.

Maybe we have both been into the sphere...
