Subconscious manifestations?

Its been a while since Ive watched the movie or seen the book, but I have done both several times. In any case, I remember a friend asking me why they cant just think of something they WANT to happen, and have that manifest instead of their fears. The only explanation I had was that their subconscious was doing the manifestations, and since you cant control your subconscious (as far as i know) you cant control what is manifested.

But then at the end they "decide to forget" the power and it works. So im a little confused whether i was correct to begin with, or whether thats a plot hole or continuity error or something.

anyone else have any thoughts on this?

They weren't able to control their ability at first, but once they understood the scope of their power, and that it worked from their subconscious thoughts, they were able to use it to erase it. Basically, it's a little like a dream. Dreams are beyond our control because we're simultaneously creating and perceiving, but once we realize we're dreaming, we can break out of that loop and control our dreams. Thus, once they realized that what was occurring were manifestations of their subconscious, they had enough control to use their power to erase it.
This is illustrated a little more clearly in the novel, when Dustin Hoffman's character first obtains the power. Being a trained psychologist, he immediately demonstrates complete conscious control of his ability, and decides to abandon Beth and Harry at first, deeming them weak and slaves to their own hidden fears, but returns when he becomes filled with guilt and rescues them.

When the explosive is about to detonate, why don't they manifest a squid picking it up and swimming away with it?

Since they do have conscious control of the power, why don't they decide to use it for good? You know, feed some African children and the like.

Because they're having to fight their subconscious fears that they aren't going to make it. Remember, Harry is still convinced that the only way for the future to happen is if *no one* makes it back alive. So Norman's having to fight back with "yes we are" the whole time, focusing on just outrunning the blast, not being able to devote the mental energy to stopping the explosion.

The entire time they have the power, survival is their one goal. If they stop to focus on, say, 30k sacks of flour landing in Ethiopia, some part of their subconscious will manifest an undersea tornado and kill them. And, as someone said in one of the other discussion threads, this is a movie about generally well-minded people being shown that their suppressed thoughts are pretty bad. So once they get up to safety, the only way to stay safe (and possibly even keep humanity safe) is to lose the power.

I am watching the scene where "Harrys Jerry" being explained and she says "Well we better not piss him off", I was thinking "Well we better give him whatever the hell he wants and try to keep him as happy as possible until we get back!"

I don't understand why this had to be a scary movie. If the 'alien' does not understand human emotion, then why is fear the only concept explored?

That doesn't make sense to me.

because fear is often unconscious--we don't always know what we are afraid of. Fear is also one of the most powerful and driving emotions. They were working in an environment of fear and uncertainty.
