Selena had a HORRIBLE father!

My friend Helen and me decided to rent a Jennifer Lopez movie to see if her acting was really that good back in the day, and settled on this 1997 dusty from the 90s. Being in our 50s, we often knit and sew while watching movies- as a way to chit chat during the story.

Apparently this is what filmmakers call a "biography" picture. It's based on a Mexican singer named Selena, who allegedly was popular in the 90s. The story is pretty simple- it's about a beautiful, independent musical artist vs. a temperamental, overbearing monster.

Poor Selena is forced to obey to her father's wrath starting at a young age. Instead of playing with the rest of the kids on the block as a child, she's stuck inside the house belting out old 50s tunes as her weird Dad plays the guitar. Helen suggested he might have even made sexual moves on her, since he seemed "infatuated with her" much of the time.

As Selena matures into a young lady, a band has formed. She falls in love with one of the guitarists but the father hates him. In a really odd scene, he yells so much at him for wanting to marry his daughter, Helen had to turn the volume of the television down so we wouldn't disturb our neighbors. It was at this point of the film (which drags a lot) that we decided to sew more. We glanced up at the movie from time to time, but the plot was already clear- the father was a controlling dictator, and the fact that the mother is a silent pot is also pretty pathetic.

There are other various characters- including a caring and nanny like assistant named Yolanda, who becomes the person in charge of Selena's fan club. When she gave her a ring, Helen and I smiled. Finally someone cares for her success, unlike her father.

We never finished the movie- but we saw 95% of it. We turned it off when Selena was asking her mother "will they like me momma?", and she has a nightmare only one person throws a rose on the stage. Considering we never heard of her indicates she was probably a one-hit wonder who vanished by the 2000s.

The movie was so-so; very very drawn out, and although Lopez is charming as the title character, we hated the father so much we can't recommend this movie. He was an abuser. The movie also doesn't have much direction. What was the point in making it? The music Selena sings is not our taste, and I can see why she never became a big name.

Here's what you didn't get from the segment you didn't bother to see (and the undertone that has escaped you from what you did see):

First of all, her popularity in the '90s was more than "alleged." It was powerhouse. I'm in MY 50s too, and on MY planet, she was well known and loved.

Selena's father was not abusive to her, sexually or otherwise. That was something I think you made up for yourself. He was EXTREMELY overbearing, but wanted nothing but the best for - and FROM - his daughter. Was he a GOOD father? Yes and no. Did he do right by her? Again, yes and no. But look how she turned out. Everything he did, right or wrong, he did FOR Selena. It was her father who cared about her success. Tell me honestly, what man doesn't hate the guy who tries to marry and take away his daughter? And finally, what was Selena's demise? Not her father, but the "caring and nanny like assistant named Yolanda" who "cared for her success" and gave her the ring you smiled at. She stole tens of thousands of dollars from Selena and Selena's fans, and after having been caught, shot Selena in cold blood.

By not finishing the movie, you missed it entirely.

Look, Art, it's this way: Not EVERY single person on the planet Earth knew/knows who Selena was. She was a modest
talent, and never achieved the fame of say, Madonna or Janet Jackson (although God knows, she was more talented
than Jackson - but who ISN'T??).

Her greatest fame came in a horrendous murder, which is why she is a "legend." She would never have attained
such fame during her lifetime. At least not in America.

I feel like he was manipulative by nature . When Chris wrote the book, he stated that Abraham would try to pit Selena & Chris against each other. He gave an example of how him and Abraham had a small altercation on the tour bus and Chris said that Abraham made a statement like “it doesn’t matter because Selena is going to believe me regardless .”

Daddy is an a!s. Known fact. Coworker used to be a body guard. Selena was very nice. Daddy lived through Selena because Daddy couldn’t make it. He has been banking off of her since she was a child and will continue till he dies. Then brother and sister will do the same.

If you see the movie Selena you'll understand why Abraham Quintanilla wanted the best for his family was because he wanted to make his family famous and when Selena was born he planned to do just that. And when he got the family started with their band he didn't want the band to be a failure as his band was and with Selena she was the apple of everyone's eye. But what is a mystery to me in the movie Abraham had a dream that he wanted to open his own Mexican restaurant when he had no expertise in the restaurant industry and when he finally opened his restaurant it was just simply a way for his kids to perform music as entertainment for the restaurant. And Marcella Quintanilla claimed in the movie that all she cared was that she wanted the best for her kids and for her kids to grow up in a nice safe neighborhood and she didn't want anyone to know about her family or the kids to talk to strangers. And it was like Marcella wanted to isolate the kids from the world and I think she made Abraham sell the restaurant and the house that they had just barely bought and they had to live with relatives to make ends meet. No wonder Abraham had them perform at fairs to make them money just to survive. But as Selena grew up she knew she was tired of being part of the family and so when she met Chris Perez she knew she had to make it on her own but when her father didn't approve of Chris because of his image Abraham should've known that his daughter was grown up and this was the guy who Selena loved with all her heart and he should've accepted Chris Perez as a nice son-in-law. And so while I don't think Abraham Quintanilla was horrible I think he just wanted the best for Selena and should've accepted her fame a bit better

I unfortunately agree. He seemed to be buttering Selena up for fame since she was a little girl just to fulfill HIS dreams of being famous again. Lucky for Abraham, Selena grew to love performing but she had other goals and priorities (school, designing, Chris, etc).

Plus, she treated Chris horribly for no apparent reason. He was nothing but NICE to Selena and the whole family. Worse thing he did was allow his drunk "buddies" to destroy that hotel, but he was remorsely sorry right after.

I do remember that scene in Selena very well and I think why Abraham didn't approve of Selena dating Chris in the first place was that he felt that Chris was gonna ruin her career because as he said in the movie "if you follow that man i'll disband the group" And Selena had to defend herself in order to keep her father from making that happen. But Abraham should've been nice to Chris at first and called him a hero because Chris and his friends actually saved Selena and her brother and sister when their tour bus got stuck in the road and that was the beginning of Selena's crush on Chris. But I think Selena's career could've been better if Abraham and Selena could've been a lot closer than ever

Wow. You must have been sewing and knitting a lot. Do you have any clue how much you got wrong in your commentary?

You didn't actually watch the film, right? Selena was American, not Mexican. When a person records albums that sell by the millions they are actually popular, not allegedly. Selena was murdered in 1995 and not really a one hit wonder. Although she was dead by 2000, her music was not. She was a big name to say the least.

Your post says far more about you than Selena. :)
