Selena's dad was an abusive douche
If that was the Quintanilla-approved version, I'd hate to see how bad he was in reality.
There is a man...he travels fast...he has purpose...he brings violence and destruction.

You think HE was a douche? Apparently you haven't heard of Joe Jackson. Abraham was just like any normal and common father. He wanted his kids to exceed him, to keep their ambitions high because he believed in them. Also, the part where he threatened to fire Chris, he had every right to be worried. I mean Selena was at a very high peak in her career. He pretty much said it best "... you're young, your beautiful, you're rich..." I'd totally understand if a parent went nuts. I don't think he's really a bad guy at all.

If he loved his child, he'd accept the man she loved.
Hi, Purple! I just read Chris Perez's book last week so I was thumbing through some of the threads and came upon your post. Hope you are well!
Just wanted to add to what you said. Not only did Abraham come to accept Chris but they are actually still close to this very day. And this is after Chris remarried and had two children. He's now divorced but the point is that he has remained a part of the Quintanilla family for nearly 18 years. He said in a recent interview that he still sees Abraham as a father figure and even brings his children to visit the Quintanillas.

Hi Poet! I didn't know Chris had a book! I think I'll read it. I knew he had gotten married and divorced and had kids.
I can't help but wonder if despite being close to the Quintanilla family, that has to be a little hard when he brings his kids over. I can't help but wonder if that think about how that should be Selena's kids.
When the hurly-burly's done. When the battle's lost and won.
The book is called, "To Selena, With Love." It came out earlier this year. I ordered it on Amazon and finished the whole book within a few days because I was so caught up in it. Chris is not a brilliant writer- Just a regular guy taking a candid look back on his life with his first love and speaking openly about the fact that he's never stopped loving her. The final line of the book is, "Selena, I'm still dreaming of you." It was so heartbreaking.....Toward the end, when he started talking about Selena's funeral and the grief he went through after her death, I had to put the book down and come back to it a few minutes later. I was bawling my eyes out! It still hurts to think how many people close to Selena were devastated by her murder. Alot of fans, myself included, judged Chris for moving on so quickly after she died but when you consider how much the second wife looked like Selena (the resemblance is striking) and the way he writes with such adoration about Selena even after 17 years, it's clear the poor guy was grief stricken and trying to replace her in some way. I wish I could say the book was uplifting at the end and I feel he tried to end it on that kind of note, but I was left feeling that he is still a very broken, sad person even after all these years.
Either way, it was a very tasteful, loving tribute to Selena and their life together. A must read for fans of hers and for anyone who ever doubted how much he loved her. Really touched my heart.....
I said the same thing you did with regard to his kids- I bet the Quintanillas see those kids as if they could have been their grandchildren. I think it says so much about Chris's character that Selena's family have remained so close to him, too.

Abraham is a great man.
shareIf anything, they portray him more as an accident-prone goofball than a douche. Nearly causing an electrical fire when he first turns on the amplifier, falling down when going to get a midnight snack, the "Papa Yoyo" argument and nearly knocking down the ladders, burning his hands on hot plates, not to mention the hilarious "Que esta pasando! Es un BRA!!" rant the first time Selena wears a bustier.
shareHe was domineering about music but he really wasn't that bad. It takes drive and discipline to succeed in music. Perhaps the OP wishes the Quintanilla family had never become a musical group? It wasn't going to happen without Abraham.
shareSo the Quintanilla's kept in touch with Chris even while he was remarried, and have also met his kids? Sorry, but I just think that would have to be awkward!

This movie is so full of romantic movie cliches... the "Daddy I love him scene" from The Little Mermaid is reenacted in the Bus when Chris is kicked out. Chris is just there to be a one dimensional love interest to give Selena guidance... This movie had me rolling my eyes when it was playing on VH1. 20 years later... It doesn't age well.
shareIf Abraham had that SAME overprotective instinct towards Yolanda, by doing background checks on her and screaming at her like he did to Chris, then Selena would still be alive.
shareDid this scene between Abraham, Chris, and Selena on the bus really happen:

Edward James Olmos really acted the hell out of this scene. I'm actually kind of intimated by him here. It's like you genuinely believe that he's this angry, overprotective father who thinks that this "bum musician" isn't good enough for his daughter.
I do agree however, where exactly was that fire with a genuine psycho like Yolanda?
