Any real cop would know not to shoot someone without knowing the full situation, even if it looks like the person was an intruder.
In all the movie was alright, but that cop was one of the dumbest cops I've ever seen. I knew I wasn't going to like him the moment he walked into the house the first time.

I must agree the cop was stupid and annoying(why annoying?..coz he was dumb), and a real cop wouldn't shoot someone head on if the person wasn't tryin to kill/hurt anyone.
shareI think you might be missing something. At the end, he and another cop are talking about it, and the other cop says something about Lawson not being found with a weapon. The way I perceived it was that the cop shot Lawson because it looked like he had killed Ellie, and by shooting him, left no room for Lawson to defend himself. Without Lawson being able to plead his innocence (and, you know, him being dead and all), it was that much easier to just close the case. He saw the mask and I think he put two and two together, what with Ellie having killed her mother.
shareAny real cop would negate with the person that has an weapon(in this case Lawson didn't have any), the only reason to open fire is if that person is getting ready to attack the victim or the cop. The only thing Lawson had in his hands was Ellie, picking/carrying her up and Lawson's back was turned towards the door when the cop came in the house. All I am just sayin is that the cop should have first asked questions then use action.
