One of the finest British films ever made yet ignored at the Oscars.

This film is a true masterpiece as well as a milestone in British film making. Such a finely crafted and deeply touching picture, I’m staggered (although I don’t know why I am), at the absence of any academy Award recognition in 98. That said back in the UK it was pretty much eclipsed that year by The Full Monty of all films! Perhaps it’s just me.

I agree and how The Full Monty can even be quoted in the same breath as this film-I grew up in this area and watching it brought back so many memories-from the opening scene in the club ordering the drinks-I go to a club like that even now-to the scene immediately afterwards in the flat-I used to go to places like that and talk the same rubbish-but thats what makes this film so personal and so real, to me anyway-and I think thats the reason why it was ignored-South London is unique and cannot be easily transfered to a wider audience-that is their loss

definitely the best British film ever

I loved this film and agree that it deserves every bit of praise and attention it gets.

But... I'm from California and I've never met anyone remotely like the people in this film. Maybe it didn't get a lot of love from Americans because they didn't relate and didn't feel like doing the work necessary to get inside the character's heads.

Even though it was a completely alien environment to me though, it felt entirely true. Quite an accomplishment.

sgzax - this film does indeed represent life for some of us here in the U.K, granted not always as extreme as in this film, but most people experience/witness something like it here.
