Were cell phones really that large in 1997?

I was watching the movie today and couldn't over the size of the flip phone Julia Roberts was using. I had forgotten how large cell phones still were as late as 1997.

reply

I didn't think anyone else would notice that. I watched it the other day and playfully freaked out, saying to my wife "is she gonna shoot him."

reply

lol... Those phones were huge but I remember having a fake cellphone that big...
now phones are the size of the antenna... lmao

**I'm gonna go change my feet**

reply

My first cellphone was about the size of a child's shoe.

Once in the 1960's a "portable phone" was shown in a sitcom, to show how important the character was, and it came in a briefcase. Not just in a briefcase to carry it in, but a case to hold all the gigamagoos needed to operate it.

I remember laughing hysterically at Harrison Ford's cell phone in Patriot Games when I rewatched it this past summer.

reply

Count me in also! I just got done watching this again and I was looking at that HUGE filp phone Julia was holding and couldnt believe how big cell phones were back then!

reply

LOL, yeah those cellphones were huge! In the scene before the wedding where Julia is wearing black jeans, she puts her cellphone on her back pocket and it gives her a big bump! How things have changed in 11 years.

Phoebe: Fire alarm?!?

reply

not really, i had a motorola cel phone in 1993 and it was the same of my palm

reply

Of course, the award for biggest cellphone in a major motion picture has to go to Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko in "Wall Street." That thing was about the size of a shoe box. It must've weighed about 13 pounds.

I think you're right there. That thing is massive! How do I make it clickable?

reply

http://barfblog.foodsafety.ksu.edu/gordon.gecko.cell.jpg

Put [url*] and [/url*] around the link. (without the asterisks)

reply

OMG the "Brick"! I forgot about those.

People on ludes should not drive!

reply

Yes! The Brick!
Honorable mention goes to Zack Morris for representing.

For help click where it says (markup enabled).

Put URL inside a pair of square brackets: [ ]
Then your the link.
Put /URL inside a second pair of square brackets: [ ]

The problem is, if I actually do it I make an active link! LOL!!

The way this works is the first Square Bracket URL Square Bracket says anything following me is a link. The second set (but with a slash) means to stop.

I was watching the movie recently & had to check the date to make sure it wasn't in 1992 or something!

I have NO idea why her cell phone was that large in 97 when I remember getting my first Sprint phone in 1998 and it looked MUCH like the smaller ones we have today.
I also remember the smaller NOKIA phones were out by then too!!

Neither do I. If you watch early episodes of shows such as the X Files which were made well before MBFW, Scully and Muldar (frequently calling one another )use much smaller cell phones than Jules's weapon.🐭

reply

yeah..they were that large!

reply

sure they were bigger than today but not all that big. I remember my dad had one from 1995 and it was a lot smaller than the one in this flick.

reply

Gekko's phone looks like a walkie-talkie!

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

reply

You can actually see a noticeable difference in size between the phone Julia is using and one Rupert is using. I think it was just a visual cue to say she was stuck in the past. Her phone looks obviously well used.

I had one in 1997 from GTE and I remember it being pretty big. Since 2003 I've been sticking with the Sidekick line and they're still big phones, but I hate small ones, they're too easy to loose and break.

reply

Bigger! My uncle had a cell phone, it was a BOX lol.
