Started out rooting for Jules, but one scene changed it all

In the beginning of this, of course, I was rooting for Jules to get him back, but the scene where she was typing the email on Walter's laptop made me do a 180. Instantly, I was rooting for Kimmy (even though I can't stand Cameron Diaz). That was so evil - and yes, I know, she didn't intend for it to be sent, but still.

I felt so bad for poor Kimmy because she was being so kind and welcoming to this woman he had on a pedestal. Most women would NOT have done that. I'm not a jealous person at all, but I don't know if I could've been THAT accommodating.

Bottom line: the movie had the right ending, in my opinion.

Well, I am sure they would eventually see each other again but they would never have that level of friendship because Michael's new best friend would now be his wife, Kimmy.

I think he would forgive and forget but I think that also would take time

I agree. I was rooting for Jules in the beginning too. It's hard not to because most of the film is from her POV. I stopped rooting for her when she wrote that e-mail too. She took it too far when she painted Kimmy and her father as selfish backstabbers. Kimmy was nice. She was young and she was very intimidated by Jules, but she was still kind to her. Most women would've either given Jules the cold sholder or thrown her some serious attitude. I'm glad Michael ended up with Kimmy in the end.

I'm not a fan of Cameron Diaz either, but I do enjoy her in this film. She has great comic timing and did a great job holding her own against Julia Roberts when she was relatively unknown at the time. Kimmy could've been very annoying, but Diaz made her likeable.

When Michael said sarcastically that he was insensitive and sexist, he was actually telling the truth about himself. Both Kimmy and Julianne can do better.

Divas Rule!

reply

Agreed. Michael is absolutely no catch. He seems to enjoy leading Kimmy on behind Jules's back. Honestly, the intimacy they shared together, the days that seemed like dates - would he have done that in front of his fiance and her family? Hell no. I would never trust this character. Actually, I wouldn't trust Michael or Jules.

It all boils down to two things:

1. Jules is actively trying to STEAL another woman's fiance. Even up to the day of the wedding.

2. Michael is encouraging her.

reply

In response to the OP feeling sorry for Kimmy, Kimmy did know what was up. This was discussed in the bathroom scene when Kimmy said, "I trusted you." Jules responds, "You didn't trust me, you were keeping me close," and Kimmy responds, "I was RIGHT!"

reply

It surprised me to learn that Kimmy had been all too aware that Jules might cause trouble for her and Michael. Though it did explain why Kim asked Jules to be her maid of honor, something I didn't understand at all at the beginning.

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

reply

I wasn't surprised at all. You could tell that she knew what was going on from their conversation in the elevator. She was all too wise about Jules and Michael and their relationship.

"Do you even remember what you came here to find?"

reply

Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.

reply

I always thought she said that to save face, like she didn;t want to admit fully trusting her. When she looked back at it in hindsight she didn't want to appear totally ignorant. Making Jules the maid of honor really didn't do much as she was constantly alone with Michael.

reply

I was rooting for her at the start too, the scene for me that changed my mind was when shes changing and Michael walks in and says she looks good without clothes and she goes back on the phone and says to George 'shes toast'

Every time I see that I think.......you bitch.
the other scne that really makes me hate Julia is the bit where jules and Michael are in the music bar, laughing and talking about old times and ordering for each other as if kimi isn't even there. I feel really sorry for her and I would have said 'shall I just go?' to the both of them.
If I were Kim, id be like what the *beep*???

I wouldn't marry Michael

reply

Yeah wtf.....after those two scenes I realized that the Julia Roberts character is a giant bitch. Funny because for years I thought it would be the other way around then when I finally watched this movie I was confused.

you are not a beautiful and unique snowflake.

reply

I don't understand how Kimmy went through that night. She specifically tells Jules that she did not like karaoke and couldn't sing, then all of a sudden they were at a place to sing Karaoke. When she insisted she didn't want to sing, Jules forces her up there to be embarrassed.

reply

I'm pretty sure that was the point of the scene, or else they would've had a different ending.

BUT, I could never hate Julia in anything. She is too wonderful.

reply

I agree. My sympathy for Julia's character ended when she did that. She may not like Kimmy personally, and that's fine. But she needs to at least respect and support Michael. Michael never promised her he'd marry her no matter what. The deal was, they'd marry each other by age 28, IF, and only if...neither had met someone by then. But, Michael did meet someone, Kimmy.

reply

I dunno...it wasn't her finest moment, but I kind of understand it. Like she said early in the movie, "This is my whole life's happiness. I have to be ruthless." She loved him and thought that he was the one for her. I can understand the desire to do just about anything in order to win back the one you think is meant for you when, in your eyes, the person he is about to marry is all wrong for him.

reply

Yeah but she only really wanted him when she found out he was engaged. Like why didn't she try everything to get him before he called her to tell her he was getting married? I think she was worried about losing her best friend more than she was in love with him. Still, she took it too far with the email. If Michael had known earlier that the email was written by Jules, then nothing bad would've ever happened.

reply

From what it seems in the beginning she did seem like she wanted to marry him before she found out about his engagement. She was explaining to her friend the pact they had and she brought it up when she was talking to Michael. So she obviously wanted him.

reply

I thought Jules manoeuvring Kimmy into singing karaoke to make her look foolish was a bit low. In the event Kimmy toughed it out.

"Chicken soup - with a *beep* straw."
