Actually I was a bit disappointed that this quartet was not in the movie, just in the beginning. I thought they were cute.

I'm LOLing.

I found it adorable when I saw it nearly 20 years ago, I saw it yesterday... lameeeeeeeeee!

I haven’t seen the movie since it came out in 1997 so I don’t remember all the details. But as a person commented on YouTube it basically spoils the ending without you realizing it because it explains which strategy wins the guy in the end.

It just sets the background for the opening credits

At the time the 50's and 60's nostalgia was still popular and I always got the impression it was just to add it in. I did enjoy it and thought it was fun but like you I also questioned why it was in there.

To me it looked very 50's or 60's anyway.

To confirm, that yes, this *is* a gay movie.

Funnily enough, I saw this film when it came out in the theaters, during my 'Cameron Diaz fandom' period. I think I was pretty much the only guy in the audience.

This is one of the few "chick flicks" I like, oddly enough I always thought it was the one where Julia Roberts looks the best and Cameron looks kind of average. I never thought much of Julia's looks until I saw this film.

I remember the British film critic, Barry Norman, saying that he thought they intentionally downplayed Cameron's looks in the film, to make Julia look better.

I don't know about that. I thought Cameron was still at the peak of her hotness around this period (but it also helps that I have a thing for ditzy rich blonde girls, and she was playing a very wealthy heiress in this film), whereas I think Julia looked her best in Flatliners (I also have a thing for skinny brunette glasses-wearing smart girls) and Pretty Woman circa 1990. Also, Julia's character was a bit of an asshole in this film, which turned me off. I often find the bad girl sexy, but only if she's either a smart working-class bad girl, or a spoiled bratty rich bad girl, and Julia was basically playing a middle-class bad girl who was, by her own admission, not very imaginative in her scheming.
