i thought this was williams hickeys final movie as it was dedicated to him and he did look genuinely seriously ill in it- but the old boy made another 2 after that -did the makers know he did not have long to live and dedicated to him?

Movies are not always released the same year they are made, in fact it's usually a year before they release them. For instance, in Smokey and the Bandit when they go to pick up the beer the town is decorated in red, white and blue for the bicentennial. That was in 1976, however, Smokey came out in 1977.
So, I would conclude that the last two films of Hickey's were actually filmed (his part) prior to the release of Mousehunt, OR, they added the dedication to him in later versions.
It actually was Hickey's final film. The movie was released shortly after editing was completed in 1997. The dedication to Hickey's memory was in the original release.
