Father is mouse

Did anyone get the idea that the father's ghost has somehow carried into the mouse??
And it was the father foiling everything so that factory would continue??

Just an idea.

reply

Yeah, I thought that at first. But then, the mouse was already around when the father was still alive, so there goes that theory.

It can still be a possiblity.

I got the idea that the father was behind their troubles when the cockroach crawled out of the cigar box at the restaurant. The mouse isn't the father but their inheriting a problem house may have been part the father's punishing them. The problems with the mouse began when they were trying to get the house ready for sale just like they were selling the factory.

reply

It's possible. Like the mouse was the father's spirit? Or friend?

The mouse isn't the father, AT ALL.

The painting is. Have you wondered why the face changes? Its because thats him.

I first saw this movie last night and, yes, the same idea occurred to me because the mouse's actions corresponded with the father's future plans for his sons and that factory. The two brothers were going against the father's plans at first. While they were doing this that's when the mouse was foiling their plans. The mouse stowing away on the brothers' vehicle as they were driving back to the string factory was a giveaway. Another giveaway was the mouse putting that cheese on the factory's assembly line so the cheese would be made to look like a string ball. The father's spirit could've have simultaneously been placed in that portrait and in the mouse.

reply

Meh, possibly i would've thought they'd give more of a hint though.

reply

Maybe the mouse is the mother! :D I mean, at the end she is sitting on top of the painting :D

Just a whacky thought

Doubt it. When they get the house they hear that the previous owner was found locked up in a trunk in the attic, which was obviously the mouse's handy work (they also found Ceasar there). This happened before Rudolf Smuntz died.

wow when did this become some college cinema experience? it's a goofy story about two guys and a mouse.

reply

Does the mouse dream of electric cheese?

reply

No, the father is not the mouse.
I first thought Charles Lyle LaRue was reincarnated into the body of this unstoppable demon mouse determined to stop snooty idiots from collected his work after going crazy.

There no proof either way. People only think the father might be the mouse because of the look he gives the mouse as the brothers are sleeping but think about it, how can a spirit inhabit a painting AND a mouse?!?

We're putting way too much thought into this.

reply

ah, i think you guys are looking at it too deep. i agree it is certainly a possibility, but if it does exist it is merely and intentionally hinted at.

reply

Could never make my mind up on this one, it seems kind of likely, mouse gets rid of previous owner then helps them get back to the factory, then they end up making string cheese which brings together their love for string and food.

reply

There's definitely something in it... but I can't put my finger on it. There are other clues... what about when the mouse goes to sleep in the tobacco tin and you see the Hawaii postcard, watch etc. I think it is the father, but would love to hear more thoughts. I can't understand why this film ranks so low.

Think of where the father's body fell into, the sewers. Where do mouses live? The sewers. It's entirely possible that the father was reborn as a mouse. As for the mouse existing before the father died? If you can believe in rebirth why not a lapse in time? These things are called miracles for a reason.

LS: Stardust 8/10 Imaginative and inspiring. Not deep but a very fun film. Worth checking out.

Smuntz is like Peter Petigrew, Smuntz changed his form and lived on in a mouse in eternity

reply

The mouse is NOT the father of the brothers! He was there long BEFORE the father died.

However, I think he might be Charles Lyle LaRue. This last house had been missing. No one knew about it ... except the Dad who received it as a payment for some debt. No one seemed to be able to live in it except that mouse. Charlie's retreat/haunt perhaps?

I think it's more likely that the Dad & Charles knew each other & helped each other out during hard times.

The spirit of the Dad is in the painting watching over his string factory. It keeps changing moods through out.

But in the end, the Dad is looking up at the mouse as if they had known each other for ages. It's more likely the mouse is Charles.

Also, Dad did not want the string factory sold. In the end, the string factory gets updated ... with the help of the mouse. It seems like Dad & Charles may have had some plans to get rich but both died before that happened.

As for the mouse pocketing the string into his cheeks, if all the above is correct, he would know about the string & know what to do to get it to twist apart into two pieces for the brothers.

(Before anyone says that mice can't live that long, um this is no ordinary mouse, remember? LOL)
