Lars is just soft spoken and more observant to the smaller, sentimental things in life, unlike his brother.

"Don't let's ask for the moon-we have the stars"

No. As some of the other posters had stated,Lars is very intelligent but doesn't have much confidence (his overbearing wife, his bully of s brother),but his character gains more confidence as the movie goes on. Like another poster had stated, this is like a modern day Laurel and Hardy film.
