Was the mouse their father?

Just watched this movie again and it struck me at the end, how the painting of their father looked up at the mouse above him. Was that meant to hint that his spirit was in the mouse the whole time, to make his sons stop fighting and work together?

I used to think the mouse was the reincarnation of Charles Lule LaRue, because of the close up of the mouse when the brothers were saying his name over and over again. I thought the mouse was trying to defend his house as he built it.

i've never thought of it like that....hmm sumthin to think about

reply

I always thought that mouse was implied as the reason Lule LaRue went crazy. Doesn't make much sense given the mouse couldn't have lived long enough though.

reply

I really don't think either LaRue or their father would let the house be destroyed over and over again to "defend" it.

Totally agree, and clever catch!
I watched it again recently and my kids loved it. The movie has a great mix of humor and mayhem, and it was funny to me that my daughter mentioned it reminded her of "Home Alone", right when I was about to say that!
I believe the mouse IS the reincarnation of their father, because the painted portrait of him keeps changing throughout the movie, and at the end of the movie his portrait is looking directly up at the mouse.

*facepalm*

No, the mouse is not the reincarnation of the father.
The mouse already existed before their father passed away.

His spirit could still take over the mouse moron

Why would a father want to hurt his children, moron.

I have always thought this for several reasons. I thought the mouse was meant to be the father trying to deter the brothers from selling the string factory and make them work together as a team. Let's face it, he was a pretty invincible mouse :) the entire house practically exploded and got flooded out, yet he still survived all the way through ^^

Also the beginning sequence makes me think this, because the old guy's body falls down the hole and then the camera pans down the hole with the beginning credits and the dramatic music, as though it has some sort of significance.

I agree with you too, I have always thought the mouse was the father reincarnated, and I was only 6 when I first watched this movie ^^

If he was the mouse, then why did he steal the lucky straw from Ernie during the auction?

reply

The mouse nibbled the piece of string in half, so the brothers could have a half each. The string falls from the sky after the house blows up, and they discover they now have a piece each. I always saw it as symbolic of the mouse/father's "spirit" trying to tell them to work together.

HHHMmmmmmmm, never thought that, only saw it once, i must see it now to see if it is father. I must admit, when I saw your initially post, I thought it was ridiculous, but now not so sure.

Never ever thought about it, but you all are right. The mouse was too smart to just be a mouse. Very clever.

No, the mouse was not the father. The father got the house as payment for a debt and a previous owner suffered the same fate as Ceasar, locked in a trunk.

The mouse probably did send La Rue around the bend, like it did everyone else. I think the father was along for the ride, enjoying every minute.

reply

The mouse is NOT the father of the brothers! He was there long BEFORE the father died.

However, I think he might be Charles Lyle LaRue. This last house had been missing. No one knew about it ... except the Dad who received it as a payment for some debt. No one seemed to be able to live in it except that mouse. Charlie's retreat/haunt perhaps?

I think it's more likely that the Dad & Charles knew each other & helped each other out during hard times.

The spirit of the Dad is in the painting watching over his string factory. It keeps changing moods through out.

But in the end, the Dad is looking up at the mouse as if they had known each other for ages. It's more likely the mouse is Charles.

Also, Dad did not want the string factory sold. In the end, the string factory gets updated ... with the help of the mouse. It seems like Dad & Charles may have had some plans to get rich but both died before that happened.

As for the mouse pocketing the string into his cheeks, if all the above is correct, he would know about the string & know what to do to get it to twist apart into two pieces for the brothers.

(Before anyone says that mice can't live that long, um this is no ordinary mouse, remember? LOL)
