Well, the character does die in the games, but you're right, killing him so early into the movie is wrong.

shareWell, the thing is that at the time when MK III was made, Johnny Cage died before the Outworld invasion began. The film just showed it at the start, because that's where the invasion begins.
shareThey really screwed up in killing/replacing Linden Ashby. Also when replacing Bridgette Wilson and Christopher Lambert.
Those three were the only likable people in the first one, and they were all gone by the time this rolled around.
