How did the studio let this happen?

With they first movie They built a successful vidoe game movie that pleased fans, viewers, critics, and made buckets of cash at the BO.

So... for the sequel they recast most of the oringinal actors, hire a first time director, and approve an apparenty terrible script??

Why not take some of that 35 million which was not a bad budget for 1997 and hire some proven writers, get paul back to director or atleast a proven director, and pay the oringinal actors enough to come back?

This movie even on paper aside from the larger budget looks like they tried to make the worst sequel possible for a successful movie.

Nobody knows for sure what happened in part 2. Threshold blames New Line for the disappointing reception, talking about forced release dates, limited budget, no understanding of anything.

The movie's plot came straight from the video-game, no? So they probably got complacent and felt they could save a few by hiring low-rate writers, directors, producers, etc.

It's honestly kind of shocking that this was a THEATRICAL release. Then again this was released the same year as Batman & Robin and Spawn which also had terrible effects work.

Saw all of them.
Zero regrets.
