what i wanna know is why they couldnt scan where the galaxy was and fire on the bug ship as it was taking off I assume they were advanced enough to have both precise scanners and weapons targeting systems. they could have just taken out the ship before it left the planet without taking out the whole planet.

No such technology is shown( the galaxy scanner). We are lead to believe that it cannot be traced, hence why no one can find it.

As for the ship leaving, firing upon random ships would be less productive than just taking out the entire planet.

Exactly. If it were easily located, then every malevolent alien in the universe would come to take it.
