Was Mikey holding a severed head?

I've always wondered this. My parents always thought it was a severed head, which is why I was never allowed to watch that part when it first came out. However, I think it is just supposed to be taken as a fake bootleg human head, built for alien disguises, essentially a robot head, if you will. They make no indication that I have noticed in the film about either, and am very curios. Does anyone know for sure?

Disguise. Notice how, after it's revealed on the pole, it continues to make expressions and be otherwise animated?

It was just made to disguise him as human. It wasn't a real head.
