I thought this piece of trivia was interesting:

"Much of the MIB traits and characteristics are in-keeping with established lore of Men in Black. For example, supposed encounters with MIBs, witnesses report they use outdated jokes and vernacular and that their dress and vehicle seem to be dated as well. In the Chinese restaurant, Agent Kay tells Edwards "Agent Jay", "be there or be square", an expression that's out-of-place for mid 1990's humor."

I was cooking during the breaks and was thinking about this very thing even before I read the trivia.

Why do think this is? I have a clue but would like to hear what you have to say first.

Wow ok, I don't know why that is interesting.

I find the MIB stories to be a fascinating subsection of the general UFO/ET mythos. If anything, the MIBs in the movie are much more humanized: in the stories, not only do they seem to be out of touch, but there's something not quite right about them: "robotic" is how they're sometimes described. Another hilarious fictional version of MIBs is in the X-Files episode "Jose Chung's From Outer Space".

The best fantasy movies are always the ones that use actual folklore as their springboard, instead of just making stuff up, or making movies about other movies. I find nearly all movies about vampires, werewolves, angels and demons, and the like pretty much unwatchable, just because they don't stand on solid ground. I know, people make fun of me for complaining about vampire movies being "unrealistic", but even we fantasists have our standards.
