spoilers* the baseball/book + the clothesline?

what was the deal with jimmy & kate putting the rolled-up 'little boy blue' book inside the metal tube for the clothesline? and then sticking the baseball on the end? the movie showed them each doing this a couple of times; & i figured it was some secret way for them to communicate SOMEthing, without ray knowing, but what? thanx.

umm i only see them doing that twice 1/2?..once jimmy puts it in there and then kate does it...i dont think it was meant for them to meet..i think kate just realize that it was there, and so she pulled it out..and then when jimmy went "away"..she put it back....
