Does the closeup at the end of the movie have a meaning?

I haven't been sure exactly what that final shot means either.

I'm not mistaken, the rusty container was what he used to throw a baseball into so perhaps it means that he achieved his dream of becoming a professional baseball player, most likely a star pitcher.

Treach: That's how I interpreted it too.

Problem is, he also had that possible foreshadowing of being a cop and married to Tracy. So that threw me off.

I'll stick with the pro-baseball interpretation for now. The other could've been an unconscious fantasy due to oxygen starvation.

Unfortunately an administrator deleted the interpretation, leaving us in the dark. Could the poster re-post it in some way that will either not offend the administrator or simply escape his(/her?) notice? I'm puzzled by the shot too.

So come on! What's the answer to this? over a decade later and still no definitive answer? Was I right? Will an admin please help with this, it would be nice to have some closure here. 
