The only question you have to ask yourself is: "What do I think?"

The Internet has all the answers!

May it be the case, that Wayland is just mocking the story of Elizabeth's murder? If he was innocent in killing her, but during the police investigation he liked the whole theme and decided to do something like that just for fun, when he'll be released? I wonder.

(As an aside, you should mark your post with a serious spoiler alert. I came in here after watching the film, so it doesn't bother me, but, your post is a bit of a giveaway and I would categorise it as a major spoiler)

I don't think he killed the girl at the end.

Waylands attraction to sleaze is a cerebral, not a physical one. That was illustrated very well during the scene where he talks to Elizabeth in the strippers booth with the phone. Not that strippers probably wear a lot in the first place, but, she's still fully 'clothed' at the end of his session (when the light shuts out), which suggests they just talked throughout, rather than, erm, chit-chat after she did her stuff.

So, for me, Waywards comment at the end i.e. "that's the whole idea" (or words to that effect) is a reference to the dangers of either feeding his fascination with human nature or some sort of buzz he gets from hanging around with prostitutes late at night. In other words he's not a serial killer.

One of the big clues, for me, is in the question he asks the girl at the end, i.e. "Are you lost?". The girl assumed that was a "nice weather, isn't it?" type greeting, but, I think he actually really meant it as a serious, philosophical question.

Wayward didn't kill elizabeth...it was Kennesaw, who pretty much admitted it during the confession scene.

that's my take on it anyway.
