Great cast. Great acting. Great story. Great cinematography. Despite all this, I'd never heard of it before I saw it on late night/early morning TV. Where has this movie been hiding and whose fault is it!?
By the way, anyone know where I could buy this movie?
I absolutely loved this movie and found it on DVD at Circuit City of all places. This movie is truly deserving of the moniker "cult classic.' Fantastic, acting, plot, cinemetography and soundtrack. Very close to a perfect movie. You are one of the few people I have ever come across who also saw the movie....how to explain that is beyond me. If you don't find it at your local Circuit City (and last I checked they stocked it) try Amazon.com online. They will surely have it. I'd be curious to know what some of your other favorite movies are.
A few of mine: Freeway, Blood Simple, Dark City, Requim for a Dream, Reservoir Dogs, The Fisher King, The Big Lebowski, Millers Crossing, Fargo, Pulp Fiction, The crying Game, The Sweet Hereafter
Nah I thought it was ok. Nothing special, but not real bad; just watchable. Tim Roth probably gave the best he could, cause he was excellent, one of the few good things about Deceiver. I had never heard about it, till one day it was on TV, and the guide said Roth was in it, that's why I saw it... But yeah, it isn't very well known.
i agree with you-it is a very underrated movie and tim roth does a great job. If you wait it will probably be on ifc so you can tape it or you can buy it online.
just saw this movie also on showtime on demand...before the movie i was like..."i never heard of this...when was this?" I'm really glad I saw it...I agree great cinematography. Now I'm wondering also why this has been hiding. While watching at first I thought I saw shades of American Psycho...but that went away quickly and the messages of both are completely different. Still, similar in certain vibes and situations at times.
Just saw this film on late night UK telly. I really enjoyed the performances of the leads, and thankfully the plot left a little room for speculation and interpretation.
tandemonium, even tho the film of "American Psycho" was shot some years after "Deceiver/Liar" (3 I just checked), I know what you mean. I seem to fuzzily recall that Bateman goes on a batshit crazy killing spree that may or may not be in his mind (if you've seen the film/read the book you'll /edit SHOULD/ know the answer) and a lot of the film walks a thin line between imagination and delusion and reality.
Anyway definitely worth a watch, for the powerhouse performances if nothing else.
Also special mention to Tim Roth for a decent and above all consistent American accent - good job sir!
woah, you have never heard of Tim Roth before! I'm like one of his biggest fans, he doesn't get enough attention for his great acting/directing talents! He does a reallly good american accent! ok here my list of kick ass Tim movies and tell me what you think:
Reservoir dogs Four Rooms The legend of 1900 Gridlock'd Pulp fiction Rosencrantz and guilderstern are dead No way home vincent and theo
those are the best ones to get started with! ^-^
The situation is I'm shot in the belly, and without medical attention I'm gonna die!
You right for some reason the film didnt get the well deserved cognition... took me hours to find out this film mainly becouse I remembered this film title as "Lair" and not "Deceiver" what else I saw it only once and it was in late 90's...
