Did she want a drink or a smoke? (minor spoilers)

About half way through the movie, Tim Roth is telling his original story about walking through the park, seeing Elizabeth and then he says that she asked him if he wanted to go get a drink. At the same time he is telling the story, we see his flashback and she is asking for a smoke.

What was the significance of that? To show that Roth is lying? If so, why wouldn't his "pretend" flashback at least be consistent with his lie? It's not like either version (drink or smoke) was true anyways.

She asked Wayland for a cigarette but Wayland lied to the cops and said she asked if he wanted to go have a drink. He said he would take a raincheck and gave her his phone number. Hence his phone number being found in her apartment after her murder.

"Ain't life grand?"
