Moral of the story?

It's true when describing a certain portion of people, not all people. Many women look for stability and confidence. Decisiveness is another quality people look for in a partner. They either find it irritating that the other person can't make up their mind or in the case of this movie, was so mixed up that she needed someone to make quick and easy decisions for her.

I can tell by your tone that you've witnessed this behavior a lot. Sometimes young males get the idea that they need to act like jerks to get women to like them, but over time I've learned that its not that paticular behavior women are looking for. It's more so the image of confidence and decisiveness that it creates.

It's true what the movie and Neil LeBlute says, nice guys finish last, bad guys finish first. But the bad guys end up unhappy and miserable as destiny or Karma soon or later will catch up to them.

I read a short story once by a famous author which is about this heartless, sociopath, misgyonist, misanthropic creep who dates and dumps vulnerable and weak-minded women as he puts it; "just for the hell of it". In the story, he makes the mistake of picking up the wrong woman; a headstrong career woman whom he matches wits with. Only when he dumps her, she will not go away. He resorts to a drasic step to make it happen by humiliating her in a verbal public way. At the very end, that woman ends up killing him. She goes to his apartment one evening just as he is preparing to go out crusing to another place to pick up his latest victim, knocks on his front door, he awswers it, and without saying a word, she shoots him seven times with a silenced .45 caliber pistol. She collects all of the shell casings on the floor as not to leave behind evidence, and leaves him in a pool of his own blood inside his apartment... just as he deserved to what was coming for him.

I disagree that her husband wasn't cheating on her. He was cheating on her with himself and that made her feel unnecessary and unloved. Just observe his reaction after he finds out the truth. It doesn't even phase him. He doesn't kick Cary's ass or come home and yell at his wife he just finishes his dinner and walks out on her.

I took this movie to mean that you don't always end up with you predict and suspect. Sometimes the best fit for us is a bad fit for everyone else. Yes, he was sadistic and mean verbally, but she was sadistic too (non-verbally). She never gave any of the first two men any reassurance or positive feedback to make them feel better about their manhood. However, I assume that Amy and Jason had perfect chemistry and both fulfilled each other's desires, fantasies and needs. They were my FAVORITE couple of the entire movie and it sucks we only got to see them for about 42 seconds before the credits roll.

I think it's somewhat more complicated than that. Unhealthy women do like a-holes. Most women don't, but they do like someone who's strong, confident, and decisive. If they can get that with a decent, loyal guy, they'll prefer it to an a-hole. But many "nice" guys are only nice b/c they're weak and fearful. And that's very unattractive. B/c they're not being nice for any good/admirable reason. So many women will prefer the a-hole to that, at least in the short term.

As one woman once put it -- women don't like a-holes. But they like wimps even less. What's frustrating for women, presumably, is the difficulty in finding someone who's both strong and reasonably sensitive/considerate, without being dependent, etc.

In this case, Amy Brennan was clearly unhealthy. She easily cheated on her (decent, if boring) husband with his best friend, simply because she was bored (depressed). Not evidence of a healthy, decent person. So it made sense for her to end up with an a-hole. She remains miserable, but probably feels that's all she deserves. She needs to be abused.

Zando777 has an insightful take on this. Enave...beware of blanket statements about half the human race. For your own sake. Beware. Life is a lot more complicated and nuanced than that. This is a story of 6 messed up people, and one of them, Cary, is a monster. There are people like him, but thankfully, they are few and far between. He ends up with Amy Brenneman at the conclusion of the movie, but I don't think in any way LaBute is saying 'this is my lesson for you viewers. Go and be like Cary, for then you shall win.'
