Yes, he I believe he was. Elena (Joan Allen's character) sufficiently shamed him into leaving.

But wouldn't he need to bring a partner along? Otherwise someone is left dry.

I don't remember if the denomination is stated, but pastors/ministers marry. Catholic priests aren't able to, but if he was some other sort of pastor, he was probably married.
