uhh....he was a kid. He didn't think it would hit the guard rail and he probably wouldn't have even have known to move if he knew the electric line would hit it.

Yeah, he didn't kill himself. He's supposed to be fairly spaced out as a character. Even in the book, he's only really thinking of Wendy and is aware that he needs to stay away from the wire. There is also a futher explanation of why the guardrail is a conductor. If it had been completely metal and in the ground, he'd been alright, but because it was not, he dies. I highly recommend the book.
